LondonSports announces
LondonSports.com 6th December 2011: In appreciation for his past contributions and leadership to developing our League, LondonSports names Mark Lowey as the first inductee to our Hall of Merit.
Mark joined LondonBaseball in 2000 as commissioner of Girls Softball. A small league of girls softball was already in place when Mark arrived but the number of participants was low. The struggling Sr. Girls division even required a team comprised of players’ mothers to round out the league. During Mark’s tenure through 2007, the girls softball program flourished. The increased interest in girls softball resulted from recruitment drives within the expat community and by reaching out to the local schools, as well.
The American School in London benefitted from this feeder program and in 2009 ASL won the Girls Varsity ISST softball championship in Frankfurt. That championship team was made up primarily of young women who had progressed through the ranks of Junior and Senior Girls Softball at Wormwood Scrubs. In 2005 Mark took on an additional role of Umpires Coordinator. LondonSports employs teenaged officials and they often require training and mentoring. Mark approached this new challenge with his usual enthusiasm by providing hands-on training sessions, weekly rule-book quizzes and on-the-field mentoring and encouragement on game days.
Today, Mark works for Saudi Aramco Oil Company in Saudi Arabia as Project Controls Engineer and Safety Supervisor. He is part of a project management team delivering upgrades and modifications to Aramco’s drilling, conveying and storage facilities in the Southern Area oil and gas fields of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province.
Mark is involved with Aramco’s baseball program which is famous for its annual appearances in the Little League World Series at Williamsport, Pennsylvania . Mark has joined this program as a coach and umpire. As was the case at LondonBaseball, there are many beginners who are new to the game. He loves to spend his spare time teaching young players.
In 2004 Mark was instrumental in bringing in LondonBaseball's first food vendor, USA-based Famous Hot Dogs Guys. Baseball and Hot Dogs at the Scrubs....nothing better in London on the weekends!
